I can hardly believe it’s been over a week since the ACFW Conference in Indianapolis (mostly because I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had time to think about it!). When I got home I posted some photos, but I didn’t really tell you much about what happened. That changes today! Every Monday for the month of October I’ll be sharing something about the conference – I hope you’ll join me!
Today starts with “Twilight”. I’ve never actually read the books or seen the movies. In fact, we didn’t talk about them at all at the conference. When I was trying to find a picture for today’s blog, however, this one perfectly demonstrates what’s new in my novel – a love triangle.
It’s not really a triangle. It’s more of a “Sweet Home Alabama” meets “Clueless” sort of a thing. The important part is that I added another male lead.
Twice now I’ve started to write Callie’s story, and after nearly 50,000 words I realize I’m forcing it and there’s no place for the characters to go. Bummer.
But while at the conference someone asked me a profound question – will Callie end up with Ryan?
Of course! That’s the way I want it! But…what if she doesn’t? What if someone else steps in? What if she never really wanted Ryan?? What if Ryan is just a distraction?! That “what ifs” kept coming – I couldn’t stop them! Within a couple of hours I realized what the story needed – another male. And that’s why I have a New Moon poster on today’s blog, because she has two men, too.
If I retain nothing else from the conference, the money was still well spent to have this revelation (which I’m now thinking I may have already shared, but it’s been so long that it won’t hurt to share it again!). I wasn’t looking for this solution, but it found me.
Question: Have you ever gone to a conference expecting to learn one thing, but walking away with something completely different? What happened?
