Judith Potts is seventy-seven years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper.

One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself, and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local Vicar.

Together, they are the Marlow Murder Club.

When another body turns up, they realise they have a real-life serial killer on their hands. And the puzzle they set out to solve has become a trap from which they might never escape…

This was such a fun, unexpected find! I’m generally a fan of the cozy mystery genre AND British audiobooks. This book checked two boxes, so I picked it up.

Normally I prefer a little more romance in my books, but the unexpected friendship between Judith, Suzie, and Becks was just delightful. It was also unexpected to read a mystery in a omniscient point of view, but it worked because the emphasis was as much on the friendship as it was on the murders. Unlike many cozy mysteries, where the emphasis is on the amateur sleuth’s non-police job, the emphasis here was really on the friendships.

Even with so much emphasis on the friends, the mystery was gripping and kept me reading. I fully plan to read the rest of the series.

For some reason, this book reminded me of the Father Dowling mysteries but the friends reminded me of the Golden Girls. A fun combo. 🙂

Rated PG for violence (not shown) and alcohol.
