Meet Princess Cimorene–a princess who refustes to be proper. She is everything a princess is not supposed to be: headstrong, tomobyish smart… And bored. So bored that she runs away to live with a dragon. And not just any dragon, but Kazul–one of the most powerful and dangerous dragons arounds. Of course, Cimorene has a way of hooking up with dangerous characters, and soon she’s coping with a witch,a a jinn, a death-dealing talking bird, a stone prince, and some very oily wizards. If this princess ran away to find some excitement, it looks like she’s found plenty!

I needed to read a book with dragons for my 2021 reading challenge, so I checked my Libby app for “dragons” and this popped up. I knew nothing about the book before I borrowed it. For a completely random book to borrow, this was surprisingly fun!

Set in a non-specific fairy tale realm, the book references all of your familiar favorite fairy tales as you follow Princess Cimorene in her quest to avoid an arranged marriage and boring existence. More interested in cooking, reading, and fighting than in embroidery, her decision to become a dragon’s princess confuses more than one person. She loves it, though.

Similar to the style of Shrek, this book embraces fairy tales in general to create a more modern take on traditional fairy tale roles and expectations. It was a fun read that focused on personal growth more than falling in love, which was refreshing. I’m always partial to love stories, but this was a lot of fun too.

Rated G/PG for some fairy tale violence. 😉 Get your copy here!
