I met author Davalynn Spencer earlier this year at an online conference. She was talking about some of her unique hobbies, and I kept thinking, She has to meet my friend, Pegg. I told her as much, and it turns out they already know each other! We had a nice laugh about that, which turned into a nice conversation, which turned into, “Hey, do you want to be on my blog?” Obviously her answer was yes, so here she is:

Thank you so much for joining me today! What was the first adult novel you read? What did you like about it?

The first grown-up novel I remember reading was Little Women. It must have hooked me on historical fiction, for I then discovered Gone With the Wind, Jane Eyre, and Rebecca.

It was hard to put down Rebecca because it was written in first-person – not that I understood that at the time. But the main female character narrates the book, and you never know her name. It is not Rebecca. I thought that was genius.

But of those early books, Jane Eyre was my favorite. I read it again and again and again.

What was the last book you read that you couldn’t put down?

The last book I read that was hard to put down was Where the Fire Falls, by Karen Barnett. Before that, it was Courting Morrow Little, by Laura Frantz.

Have you ever read a recommended book that you didn’t like?

The book recommended to me that I did not like was Wuthering Heights. I did not care for the dreary tone and didn’t finish reading it.

If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?

If I could have dinner with any fictional character, it would be Charlie from The Lady and the Lionheart, by Joanne Bischof. I was fascinated by his complex character, tenderness, bravery, self-sacrifice, and loyalty. The book is expertly crafted and one of my top favorites.

If you could have one of your books turned into a movie, which book would you pick? Who would you want to play the main characters?

Books-into-movies are so often disappointing. So much is left out, and lately, so much is changed until you hardly recognize the story at all. However, if I could see one of my books turned into a movie, it would be my novella, The Wrangler’s Woman. Scott Eastwood would play the part of Josiah Hanacker and Erin Krakow would make a fiery Corra Jameson.

Who’s your favorite author?

My favorite author is hard to identify because I love Laura Frantz, Joanne Bischof, Louis L’Amour, Frank Peretti, Joel C. Rosenberg, CS Lewis, and Mark Twain. However, the author who most often whisks me away to her storyworld and wraps my heart up with that of the hero and heroine is Tamera Alexander.

What are five of the books currently on your TBR list?

My TBR list includes, but is not limited to:

Colors of Truth by Tamera Alexander
The Heart’s Charge by Karen Witemeyer
Christmas at Carnton by Tamera Alexander
Behind the Scenes by Jen Turano
Enemies and Allies by Joel C. Rosenberg

The Wranglers Woman – A widowed rancher, a rebellious child, and the woman who comes to help. Falling in love wasn’t part of the deal.

Corra Jameson doesn’t think of herself as a spinster and is content to spend quiet evenings with her books. Paper beaus, her sister calls them, teasing her about the stories Corra reads. But when a rugged widower asks her to come to his ranch for the summer to help him with his tomboy daughter, she sees opportunity to earn a side of beef for her sister’s family. Besides, she has nothing to lose in the arrangement. Except perhaps her heart.

Widowed rancher Josiah Hanacker’s sister-in-law threatens to take his daughter away from him if he can’t raise her like a lady. Since he can’t, he needs a woman to do the job for him. Corra Jameson, the spinster who works at the Ford Junction boarding house may have just what his ranch-raised girl needs, and he hires her as a lady-trainer. Trouble is, he hadn’t figured she’d have what his lonely heart needed as well.
