I recently did something I’ve never done before – I bought a book based solely on the first sentence.

“It used to be Cliff and Vivian and now it isn’t.”
— The English Major, by Jim Harrison

I don’t usually do this. I’m the kind of person who thinks, “Oh, I’ll bet it gets better.” I try to give a book at least three chapters before I abandon it, but this time I thought I’d go for the first line because most editors/agents will tell you it’s the selling point.

So today I’d like to read your first line, or feel free to share one that captured your attention. The opening line from my current WIP (temporarily entitled “The Best Laid Plans, and Other Catastrophes) is this:

“I hate breaking up with boyfriends, but it beats the alternative.”

Your turn!
