My first experience with Nancy J. Farrier was a beautiful historical romance, but there’s more to her than history!
Welcome, and thank you for joining me today. What was your favorite chapter book? What did you love about it?
I devoured two series of books when I was young. First, The Black Stallion series—because horses. I loved all things horses and that series was amazing. The second was the Trixie Beldon series. I enjoyed the characters and the mysteries they solved. The adventure kept me turning pages and there was even a hint of romance thrown in.
What was the first book you read that you couldn’t put down?
In Sophomore English class, we were assigned books to read, as you are in most English classes. This teacher assigned this weird book call, The Hobbit. I wasn’t certain I would like anything with such a strange title. That night I was supposed to read one chapter. Instead, I read half the book and finished it the next day. I reread the book with the class and have read The Hobbit again several times over the years. It’s a favorite book and I am thankful to the teacher who assigned that story for class reading. Who knew furry-footed adventurers would be so exciting?
Have you ever finished a story and wished it had ended differently? How would you have changed the ending?
This would apply to any book that doesn’t have a happy ending. Life is so often sad that when I read I want a happily ever after. I want to end on a note that leaves me sighing for more or smiling and wishing I could continue in that story. I remember reading Cold Mountain years ago, great writing and a wonderful story, but that ending left me depressed and so sad. I don’t like that feeling when I finish a book. I guess I’m too much of a romantic.
If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?
Well, who wouldn’t want to have dinner in a hobbit hole? I wouldn’t be crazy about the pipe smoking but just imagine talking with Bilbo or Frodo. The stories they could tell and the food they would share. Maybe even Gandalf would drop by or the dwarves. And there’s always the possibility of Gandalf setting off some of those amazing fireworks. I could listen to those dwarves sing a song or two. What fun!
If you could visit any fictional place, where would you go?
I seem to be stuck with the idea of fantasy. I would love to visit Middle Earth or Narnia. Both worlds are so well drawn that I can almost feel them around me. Their characters come to life as do the worlds themselves. The beauty of the land and the variety of the characters would never get tiring. I would go to either place in a heartbeat.
What book are you most looking forward to reading next?
I’ve been so busy I’m behind on reading books by authors I love. Courtney Walsh has a new book out, Is It Any Wonder. I love Courtney’s books for their beauty of story and the depth of characterization. Her stories seem so light, but always share a deeper truth that leaves me with plenty to ponder after the end of the story. Her books are always a treat.
Who’s your favorite author?
This is one of those impossible questions. I think it would be easier to ask who is your favorite author in a certain genre, but even then I would be hard pressed to answer with just one name. Becky Wade writes amazing contemporary romance. Morgan Busse’s, Ravenwood Saga series is a favorite in fantasy, and for a thriller (not Christian) series, I love Gregg Hurwitz’s, Orphan X series. I could go on and on. Because books. And authors. What’s not to love?

Nancy J. Farrier grew up on a small farm in the Midwest amidst a close-knit family and a large extended family. She loved farm life including the animals, cooking, gardening and canning, but not so much the cleaning house part. A little-known fact is that she preferred to help with feeding cattle or mending fence than helping with housework.
In school Nancy often got in trouble in history class for hiding a fiction book in her text book to read during the teacher’s lecture. Or, she daydreamed her way through classes, writing stories in her head instead of paying attention to the teacher. English and Literature were her favorite classes.
Now, a best-selling, award winning author of Christian fiction, Nancy lives in Southern Arizona. Nancy loves reading, hiking in the desert, and needlework. Connect with Nancy on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. You can also find her at her website, nancyjfarrier.com.
