Here's my tale:
My sister and I tip-toed down the creaky stairs and prayed that my parents wouldn't hear us. Our little minds had the path from the steps to the living room memorized, so we easily navigated the dark rooms. When we reached our destination we turned on the dullest lamp, the one in the corner that would illuminate our bounty but not reach to the top of the stairs.
With two clicks the bulb lit up. Our eyes struggled to adjust as we surveyed our prizes. I don't even remember what I got that year, because my sister had the ultimate gift – the Barbie office/home set! A blue and pink hexagon pillar that opened up to give Barbie a home on one side and her work space on the other. I wanted that toy!
Since I couldn't have it, I did the next best thing – I helped my sister painstakingly apply hundreds of tiny stickers on the pretty plastic. In no time at all, Barbie had pictures on the walls and a computer on her desk. That's when I knew that I wanted a pink and blue office, too (not like the dull gray office of my dad).
The grandmother clock chimed five times. As any adult would have guessed, by the time our little hands had finished with the stickers, our young bodies were drifting back to sleep. We carefully replaced Barbie's new pad under the tree, confident that our parents would never know what we had done.
