I’m currently at my parents’ house (on my to the American Christian Writers conference in Grand Rapids). I’m VERY excited about the conference, but I have a confession…
I haven’t been doing very well on my reading goals for the month.
Novels? Oh, I’m set there. I think my goal was four novels…I’ve read about eight.
Craft book? Yeah…that’s my problem.
Am I worried? NO!
Here’s the deal – I’ve discovered that I’m a plot-driven writer, which means my characters tend to be pretty flat. With that in mind I’m reading “The Art & Craft of Writing Christian Fiction” by Jeff Gerke. He is also a plot-driven writer, so his chapters on how to develop better characters really ministered to me.
I took my time learning the “mastery” of developing my characters. I wanted to learn as much as I can! And now that I’ve read those I find it hard to keep reading.
Why? Because I need to develop my characters!
So in the past couple of days I’ve done sketches for three characters from my WIP. There are three other minor characters that also need minor sketching.
I’m LOVING this process!
I have a better understanding for the characters, which is altering my plot, which is making me realize that I will basically be rewriting the entire thing (sigh). But I am MORE than happy to do that if it will produce a better manuscript!
I’m geeked.
But I’m also exhausted…it’s 11:30 pm and I need to get up in six hours.
No promises that I’ll get anything posted Fri/Sat, but I will have something up here on Sunday. Have a good weekend!
