A wealthy hotel heiress.
Torie Bergstrom hasn’t been back to Georgia since she was ten, but she’s happy to arrange a job for her best friend at one of the family properties on Jekyll Island.
A suspicious death.
When Torie learns that her best friend has drowned, she knows this is more than a tragic accident: Lisbeth was terrified of water and wouldn’t have gone swimming by choice.
A fight for the truth.
Torie goes to the hotel under an alias, trying to find answers. When she meets Joe Abbott and his daughter rescuing baby turtles, she finds a tentative ally.
But the more they dig, the more ties they find to Torie’s mother’s death twenty years before. Someone will risk anything—even more murder—to hide the truth.
I’ve know about Colleen Coble for years but just recently realized I’ve never read one of her books! So I picked this up on Libby to give it a whirl. This story was a hit but also a miss for me, and I’m confident most of that’s because I work in publishing and read manuscripts ALL the time.
Hits:
– The easy flow of the book pulled me in right away. Despite the misses (below), I need to know how the book ended, so I stayed up late a couple of nights.
– I SO appreciate a slower opening that let me get to know the characters before jumping into the suspense! I’m not a fan of feeling confused for the first half of the book, which often happens with suspense books.
Miss:
– Repetition. Joe has thick brown hair and green eyes. Torie is 6-feet tall, and she wears her height well/isn’t ashamed of it. Descriptions like that appeared frequently throughout the book. I’m not sure if most readers would notice, but sometimes I can’t turn off my editor’s brain. 🙂
Overall, though, I enjoyed this more than most romantic suspense novels because I had a chance to familiarize myself with the people and setting before all the action started. I’m sure I’ll pick up another Coble book in the future.
Rated PG for violence (not all of it shown).
