Recent college grad Emmaline’s “real life” is shaping up to be a bit too
1. Mind-numbing, dead-end job? Check.
2. Aloof, self-absorbed boyfriend? Check.
3. A mountain of debt even Sir Edmund Hillary would have trouble surmounting? Check.
So when Emmaline lands an interview for a food-critic job at the Boston Sunday Times, she’s sure she has (finally!) stumbled onto the road to success. But soon an unexpected detour—in the form of Mark Loffel, her high school one-night stand—(re)appears, sending Emmaline careening in a whole new direction.
When the dust settles, will Emmaline have the life of her dreams? Or will her adorable little secret be revealed for every Tom, Dick, and Mark to see?
My first Maggie Bloom book, I picked this up during Amazon’s stuff-your-Kindle sale.
I don’t know if it’s a generational thing, but I had a hard time connecting with the main character. Her expectations of her parents’ financial support and her general assumption that, as a 22/23yo college grad, she knew better than anyone else (including her very experienced boss) was a bit off-puting. And while I’m all for suspending disbelief for a plot point, Emmaline’s life is a series of mistakes and random coincidences that somehow work together in her favor. For me, it eventually made it past the believable point.
The style was light and easy to read, I just didn’t quite click with it.
Rated PG13/R for swearing and adult situations.
