Ari Abrams has always been fascinated by the weather, and she loves almost everything about her job as a TV meteorologist. Her boss, legendary Seattle weatherwoman Torrance Hale, is too distracted by her tempestuous relationship with her ex-husband, the station’s news director, to give Ari the mentorship she wants. Ari, who runs on sunshine and optimism, is at her wits’ end. The only person who seems to understand how she feels is sweet but reserved sports reporter Russell Barringer.
In the aftermath of a disastrous holiday party, Ari and Russell decide to team up to solve their bosses’ relationship issues. Between secret gifts and double dates, they start nudging their bosses back together. But their well-meaning meddling backfires when the real chemistry builds between Ari and Russell.
Working closely with Russell means allowing him to get to know parts of herself that Ari keeps hidden from everyone. Will he be able to embrace her dark clouds as well as her clear skies?
This is a hard book for me to review because I loved most of it, but I’m not sure I can forget the parts that I didn’t.
Here’s the gist of it: most of this book is a Reece Witherspoon movie. Then, there’s a porn scene. Then, it’s back to Reece Witherspoon.
I read a lot of general market books with sex scenes in them. I prefer not read too much detail, but I understand that a lot of general market books include them. For the most part, I can skim past them and it doesn’t bother me much. That was back in the day when things weren’t so explicit and the sex scenes seemed to match the story (i.e. you could tell from the tone of the book that you were likely in for some steamy scenes).
This book, however, really threw me because the story was more rom-com/dramedy, but the sex scenes were something I’d expect to see in adult-only fiction–they actually made me uncomfortable. I understand that there’s an audience for those scenes and they don’t bother a lot of people, but that’s not me. I LOVED this story, but the sex scenes were so out of character for the genre that (as you can see), I’ve had a hard time moving past them.
I really enjoy Solomon’s style and voice–I loved the characters in this book, and I loved the story itself. I just wish the tone of the sex scenes matched the tone of the rest of the book.
Overall, excellent story, but be prepared for some overly descriptive sex.
