We interrupt your regularly scheduled writing-related post to bring you some information on a health issue that has pretty drastically affected my writing career. Today we’re going to talk about adrenal fatigue.
In case you missed it, two years ago I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue (you can read more about my experience here). The short version is this: adrenaline is the fuel your body needs to run. When your adrenals are fatigued, you don’t have enough fuel, so there are days when your body just WILL NOT run.
Things are going much better these days, but I’ve found myself pretty dependent on my supplements – I can’t go very long without slipping back into the bone-deep exhaustion and frustration that is adrenal fatigue. Lucky for me, Fawne Hansen read my post and reached out to me.
Fawne is an author and wellness coach specializing in the treatment of chronic stress and adrenal fatigue! With the help of Dr. Eric Wood, she wrote The Adrenal Fatigue Solution: How to Regain Your Vitality and Restore Your Energy Levels. Brilliant! She sent me a copy of her book and I couldn’t wait to tear into it. Unfortunately, however, I was still feeling fatigued and overwhelmed, so it took me a few months to sit down and read it. When I finally got into it, I couldn’t put it down.
Here’s what I loved about her book:
1. The Science: If you’re one of those people who wants to know how and why everything works, this is the book for you. Fawne talks about all of the systems in the body that work with and for the adrenal system, as well as how they affect each other. Honestly, I’m not a science person so I skimmed this, but it’s the type of information my husband loves.
2. The Breakdown: Not only does this book explain different levels of adrenal fatigue, it even offers suggestions for exercise, diet, and lifestyle based on each level (e.g. I was in Stage 4 – the worst stage – and I should not have been trying to do something as vigorous as CrossFit, I should have been doing something less stressful, like stretching).
3. The Guidance: The book doesn’t simply say, “Get a B-complex vitamin.” Fawne and Dr. Eric tell you which types of vitamins are better than others (without pitching you a specific brand). They also explain how AF can be missed or misdiagnosed by many doctors (as was mine).
I’ve read through the book once and am excited to go through it again – this time with a pen and paper so I can make myself notes about the foods to eat, the foods to avoid, the vitamins I need, and more. Before I read The Adrenal Fatigue Solution: How to Regain Your Vitality and Restore Your Energy Levels, I was pretty depressed – I was still sluggish and still struggling with this weight gain and still needing my supplements. Now I’m hopeful – I see how I’ve been exercising wrong for my energy level, and how my diet has been fighting against my supplements. Not all of these changes are going to be easy, but now I know how I can start to improve my own health. It’s so encouraging to know that I have more control than I realized! I will be forever thankful to Fawne for reaching out to me with her knowledge.*
*I received a free copy of this book, but was under no obligation to give a good review. These opinions are my own. I don’t mean to sound like a commercial, but this is a subject I’ve become quite passionate about.
