It’s no secret that I’ve struggled the last few weeks with my fiction writing (and by struggled I mean that I haven’t written anything). Writing isn’t a problem – I do that every week for the newspapers. Creating, however, isn’t happening. My heart doesn’t want to go back to my first two manuscripts, but I can’t get my brain to start formulating new plots/characters/settings.
With all of this “free time”, my husband and I have been enjoying some time together in one of our favorite places – the movie theater. There’s just something about sticky linoleum, uncomfortable arm rests, and seat shaking surround sound that tickles my senses.
Thanks to the generosity of many major corporations (Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s, and General Mills – I’m looking at you!), the hubs and I have seen over a dozen movies for free [movie passes – love ’em!]. While I enjoyed The Blind Side, When in Rome, and How to Train Your Dragon, nothing really excited me until recently.
The Losers. Prince of Persia. Robin Hood. Are you noticing the theme?
Action!
I don’t know why it so appeals to me, but if there’s shooting, chasing, punching, and kicking, I want to see it. I need to see it. I’m practically salivating as I think about this weekend (A-Team, I’ve been waiting for you!). If there really is a “muse” in my life, then it is, without a doubt, the action/adventure flick (with a side of romance). I don’t care if it’s sci-fi, historical, or video game inspired – follow a good fight scene with a quick kissing scene and I’m yours!
I’ve also discovered a fabulous side effect of these crazy movies. They make me want to write again, which is interesting since I write women’s fiction and romance, but I don’t care! Maybe it’s the adrenaline. Maybe it’s the music (hello – Iron Man 2 soundtrack). Whatever it is, it’s working. I’m definitely ready to start creating (right after I review some conference notes and finish reading another book on writing – there’s no use starting if I’m doing it wrong, right?).
What about you? Do you find inspiration in any unlikely places?
I'm always inspired by movies. I loved Prince of Persia and Robin Hood. After a movie like that the synapses in my brain fire away at light speed and my mind fills up with new ideas.
🙂
I've just started Creativity Boot Camp for all genre's of artist, and it's got me inspired. But I want to linger over their work, which takes time, and soon I'm scrambling to get my pieces done before sundown! Being immersed in art work that I don't do, inspires me.
I want to see Prince of Persia, and not just for Jake's biceps. 🙂
Hmmm. Not any unusual places.
But I could use some now after a loooong vacation.
Blessings on that inspiration!

This is why you'll often find me at the movies – sometimes with a friend and sometimes by myself. Movies totally jump-start my creativity, not to mention give me a chance to relieve my stress and procrastinate when writer's block strikes. Oh – and feed my addiction to movie popcorn. Definitely my very favorite pastime. 🙂
