I am beyond thrilled this month to introduce you Sherrinda Ketchersid because I had the privilege of working with her on her debut novel! Despite all fun (i.e. hard work), however, we didn’t get to know a lot about each other personally. Now we get to sit down and I get to know the woman behind the story!

Thank you so much for being here! Let start at the beginning. What was your favorite picture book as a child? What did you love about it?
My favorite picture book was Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. I loved the beautiful princess, the three funny fairies, and the prince slashing the mass of thorns surrounding the castle that kept him from saving the princess. Of course, we can’t forget him battling the witch who turns into a dragon. When the prince slays the dragon, it is epic. Sigh. Adventure and the battle for love.

What was your favorite chapter book (once you got over Prince Philip)?
I’m not sure if this is actually the first chapter book, but it is what I remember reading. Nancy Drew chapter books. I loved that a girl was the hero of the story, solving problems that no one else could. It was empowering!

She was my favorite too! I still recommend her to young readers. I hope they enjoy them, but I know not everyone will. Have you ever had a book recommended to you that you didn’t like? No names, but what didn’t you like about it?
Yes, unfortunately. The book was so slow and the romance was barely there. Being a huge romance fan, I struggled with caring about the characters and what they were doing … which wasn’t much. I can always find good things to say about a book, regardless of my feelings about the story, so I focus on that when reviewing.

That’s a kind approach. Now let’s completely switch topics. If you could be part of any fiction family, which would you pick?
This was a difficult question, but I think I’d like to be a part of the Bradford family from Becky Wade’s Bradford series. The Bradford sisters are each from a different mother, yet are very close knit and supportive of one another. It could have been a very different scenario—jealously over a new sister coming from a mother who replaced your own could have made them resentful and angry with each other. I think a home that fosters such love and support would have been a great place to grow up.

What a great perspective. What book are you most looking forward to reading next?
I just started Knox, by Susan May Warren. It is one I’ve been looking forward to because it is the story with a male lead character. I haven’t read her other adventure series, so I’m excited about diving into this one. I am drawn toward action, and think I can learn a lot about character development amidst adventure from Warren. I’m a couple of chapters in and am loving the story.

You like the action/adventure, but you said romance is your favorite genre. Why is that?
I read a lot of contemporary, but I especially love historicals because they allow me to escape more easily from reality. Falling into another era is not only instructive, but fascinating. People in the past struggled with the same feelings and inner struggles as we do. They just experienced them in a different setting and time. We are all the same, past and present. I just think reading about our sameness in a different setting and era makes for an interesting read.

Okay, enough about other people’s books. Let’s talk about yours. Your debut novel, Lord of Her Heart, releases this month. If someone wanted to turn it into a movie, who would you cast in the lead roles?
I would cast Henry Cavill as Malcolm, just with longer hair. I’ve seen pictures of him in armor from when he was in The Tudors, and he makes for a great hero. For Jocelyn, I would choose Emilia Clarke who starred in Me Before You. She seems sweet, yet persistent in what she wants. While she is beautiful, I think she could disguise herself as a boy and get away with it. Plus, I think the two would look good wrapped up in a kiss. 🙂
