A German Shepherd police dog witnesses a murder and if his owner–an Iraq war vet and former cop-turned-thief–is convicted of the crime, the dog could be put down. Few rival Andy Carpenter’s affection for dogs, and he decides to represent the poor canine. As Andy struggles to convince a judge that this dog should be set free, he discovers that the dog and his owner have become involved unwittingly in a case of much greater proportions than the one they’ve been charged with. Andy will have to call upon the unique abilities of this ex-police dog to help solve the crime and prevent a catastrophic event from taking place.
David Rosenfelt is my go-to read when I want something humorous but not simple, yet clean enough to listen to around my family. I’ve listened to several Andy Carpenter mysteries, and I love that I can listen to them out of order without missing too much (like Law & Order, it’s more about the individual stories than the series-long subplots).
I’ve listened to several of his books on audio, and the narrator (Grover Gardner) does an amazing job adding levity and seriousness when needed. (If I ever read a paperback, I know I’ll have Gardner’s voice in my head reading the book to me.) This story didn’t disappoint.
I love the honesty of Andy Carpenter, wanting to be lazy but also having enough of a moral compass to do the right thing when he needs to, such as agreeing to help a murder suspect at the request of a friend. I love his dry humor, but his intellect is also exceptional–there’s never an easy-to-solve case (that I’ve read thus far) with only one suspect.
Overall, the Andy Carpenter series almost has a cozy mystery feel to it but instead of the hero being an untrained sleuth with a passion for solving crimes, Andy is a fully-equipped attorney with a passion for avoiding the courtroom. This story followed the pattern with a large (almost hard to manage) cast of characters, plenty of dogs, suspense, and lots of dry humor. It’s everything you want from an Andy Carpenter book.
Rated PG/PG-13 for violence.
