Calling all fans of romantic suspense — I have an author for you! Reader and writer of suspense, Laura Thomas tells us a little about her favorite books and what she wants to read next (it kinda surprised me!).

Welcome, and thanks for joining us today! What was your favorite picture book as a child? What did you love about it?

I was a true bookworm as a child and had so many favorites, but one in particular was extremely well-loved and well-read. Hilda Boswell’s Treasury of Fairy Tales was a huge book with beautiful pictures, given to me by my grandparents on my third Christmas. It includes all the classic fairy tale stories such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears, as well as some more obscure selections like The Brave Little Taylor and The Frog Prince. I still have my precious book and it evokes the fondest memories of sitting on my grandparents’ laps and being read to and then eventually reading the stories for myself. It’s a treasure to me!

What was your favorite chapter book? What did you love about it?

When I was eleven years old, I received an illustrated chapter book version of the classic, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and is soon became my favorite read. I secretly longed to be an author like the feisty protagonist Jo and enjoyed the relationships between the four sisters and Marmee. I’m one of four sisters myself (and an author!) and I’m delighted that Little Women is still my favorite book to this day.

What was the last book you read that you couldn’t put down?

The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus by Jaime Jo Wright. It’s a beautifully written split time historical mystery with 1928 and present-day settings. An abandoned train depot, a serial killer, and unforeseen romance weave both stories together seamlessly with faith, love, and forgiveness—and there’s just enough circus creepiness to make it an absolute page-turner!

If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?

As Little Women has a special place in my heart, I would have dinner with Jo March. We would talk all things writing and I could get the inside scoop on what it was really like to be a female author back in the day. I would also be curious to see how the rest of her life unfolded with future written works and with Professor Bhaer.

If you could turn any of your books into a movie, which would you pick? Who would cast as the main characters?

I would love to see my Christian romantic suspense novel, The Glass Bottom Boat, as a movie! With its tropical Jamaican location, a gorgeous beach wedding, a dramatic speedboat rescue attempt on the ocean, and Vanessa Hudgens and Chris Pine in starring roles, it would be spectacular!

What book are you most looking forward to reading next?

After a phenomenal experience whale watching a couple of months ago, I had a sudden urge to read Moby-Dick by Herman Melville! My son bought me a copy years ago and it’s been neglected on my shelf up until now, so during the winter months I plan to steadily sail my way through this classic.
