It’s been a month – one month since I quit my accounting job, and one month since Aunt Linda moved in. I had to switch gears. No more writing with a dead tired, fuzzy brain. No more nights of having to decide whether or not I want to write for a paycheck or work on my novel. Most importantly, no more commute.

Now I’m at home 80% of the time. I work in the living room (where I relocated my office) and hit the gym 4-5 times a week. I cook from scratch at least 75% of the time (up from less than 50% while I was working full time). I Skype with my niece and nephew as often as possible. I’m most excited about the fact that I finally finished the last edit on my manuscript. I started my next novel. I even managed to pick up some freelance copy writing jobs (that pay!).

I wasn’t sure how it would work, trying to work at home with Linda around. Turns out it’s just about perfect. Linda has her own room, now (she’s never had one before). Her room is loaded with a new TV, cable, a radio, recliner, and no interruptions. She loves having her own space, so I don’t actually see much of her. If I don’t get my work done I don’t have anyone to blame but myself – Linda respects my need to write, so she’s happy to leave me alone during the day.

Now that we’ve had some time to get settled, it’s time to get serious. I live by my day planner, scheduling everything from phone calls to God-time. It keeps me focused and helps me set realistic goals about what I can (and should) accomplish on a daily basis. I’m also putting Linda to work. She’s a champ in the kitchen, emptying the dishwasher and setting the table. She also cleans floor and takes care of the cats. Linda likes knowing that we trust her with those responsibilities, and I appreciate the help.

So far the transition is working. We’re all adjusting well and still being productive. I’m looking forward to finding the new groove, to finding even more productive hours, and helping Linda find more ways to challenge and enjoy herself. September was good to us. I hope October took notes!
